Marian Washington is a retired American basketball coach who is considered one of the most successful women's basketball coaches in NCAA history. She was born on October 24, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri. Washington grew up in a family of athletes and was a standout athlete herself in basketball, track, and tennis.
Washington began her coaching career at the University of Kansas in 1973, where she served as an assistant coach for two seasons. In 1975, she was hired as the head coach of the Kansas women's basketball team, where she would go on to spend the next 31 years.
During her tenure at Kansas, Washington led the team to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 1993. She finished her career with a record of 560-442, making her the winningest coach in Kansas women's basketball history and one of the top 25 winningest coaches in NCAA women's basketball history.
In addition to her coaching success, Washington was also a pioneer for women's sports, fighting for equal opportunities and resources for women's basketball programs. She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
